Since 1952

My granny and grandfather started farming here at Boscarne in 1952. Granny was a farmer's daughter from across the road and grandad was a first generation farmer who moved to the area to work as a farmhand after leaving school. It didn't take long for him to take a shine to the organist at the local chapel and so the story began.

They started milking with a few Guernsey cows which my grannie's father gave them when they got married. Grandad looked after the field work and granny took a leading role with the cows as well as bringing up a family of two. Of course she was still playing the chapel organ when she could.

My father, Bernard took a keen interest in the farm from an early age helping out after school and weekends. He took an active role in the farm when leaving school particularly with the pigs. Sadly the pigs went over time but the farm continued to milk cows, grow barley, forage crops, early potatoes and spring cabbage - a very traditional mixed west Cornwall farm.

Bernard married a farmer's daughter from St Erth which was a long way away at the time - 13 miles! He and Penelope had two children, Louise and myself Julian. The farm continued to evolve and move with the times with the addition of more land and more cattle. By 1995 the original rented farm had grown from 50 acres to 140. It was at this time that the landlord approached us offering the opportunity to purchase the farm, I was finishing a national diploma in Agricultural Engineering. The decision had to be made as to whether we wanted to burden ourselves with a mortgage and whether I wanted to come home to farm.

The inevitable happened I came home to farm and together with my parents we bought the farm.

In 2011 I got married and we now have two children that enjoy living the farming lifestyle.

The farm continues to grow with the addition of more land rented or purchased to the current size of just over 400 acres.
